Baldwin 503 Split sound

Deze 'Jazz Guitar Split Sound' komt nog uit de engelse Burns fabriek, en behoort tot de modellen die naar de VS zijn geëxporteerd. Dit is te zien aan de gekraakte polyesterlak die de klimaatwisseling niet aankon. Dat hadden ze allemaal, en dit vormde een groot probleem voor Baldwin. Er is dus wel zware lakschade (zie foto’s), maar dat hoort bij deze vroege in Engeland geproduceerde Baldwin gitaren en de oorzaak staat goed beschreven in het burns-boek 'Pearls and Crazy diamonds' van Per Gjörde.

Dit exemplaar mist de brugplaat en tremolo arm, maar is afgezien daarvan  origineel.  De gitaar is licht bespeelbaar en de drie laagohmige Burns split sound elementen doen het nog prima.  Alsook de befaamde 'Split Sound, Jazz, Treble, Wild Dog schakelaar'.

Deze gitaren hebben zeer bijzondere electronica. Zoals op de detailfoto’s is te zien, zitten er naast condensatoren en potmeters ook nog twee audiotrafo’s onder de slagplaat. Zij zetten het  laagohmige signaal van de elementen om in het hoogohmige signaal wat gebruikelijk is voor electrische gitaren. Deze audiotrafo’s geven hun eigen unieke kleuring aan het signaal.

This 'Jazz Guitar Split Sound' is an early Baldwin from the English Burns factory. This model was exported to the USA. Proof of this can be seen in the severely cracked poly finish. All of these exported models had this happening due to the climatic differences. They all had it and this was a major problem for Baldwin. Several of these guitars were refinished before sale in the USA, but most were not. There is heavy damage to the finish (se detailed photographs, but as said comes with the UK produced Baldwin guitars. The reasons for this have been documented in the Burns-book 'pearls and crazy diamonds' by Per Gjörde.

This particular instrument is missing a bridge coverplate and a tremolo arm, but is otherwise in fully original condition.   The guitar plays lightly with low action, the three Burns Split sound pickups are in fully working order as is the bizarre 'Split Sound/Jazz/Treble/Wild Dog' switch.

The Split Sound guitars have very special electronics! As can be seen on the photographs, there are not only pots switches and capacitors, but also two audio transformers. They are there to convert the low impedance signal of the pickups into a high impedance signal, and lend a special colour of their own to the sound of this guitar.
